This wonderful winter lettuce is a Pennsylvania Dutch selection of a now-extinct late 1700s variety known as White Tennis ball. Landis Winter is one of the hardiest, most frost-resistant lettuces out there. The leaves are thick with a low water content, but the texture remains soft and pleasant.

We plant it out in the garden without any protection starting in early March. In our Connecticut gardens, it survives through snowfall, temperatures in the lower twenties and freezing rain without a hiccup. This Butterhead type reaches 11 to 12 inches in diameter.

Plant in thick bands for baby greens or 14 inches apart for head lettuce. Plant in September for fresh greens throughout the Winter.
